Set yourself up to win at your sewing! This course covers all the introductory knowledge you will need to understand your machine and how to work with it. By working through a series of simple and fun projects you will gain confidence on sewing machines and absorb lots of useful tips and tricks to improve your sewing. This is a great course for those with very little experience (or no experience!) working with textiles. We will provide almost everything you will need to complete the projects, though we will need you to bring some of your own things to class (see below). By the end of the course you will have the skills and confidence to plan through simple projects independently or go on to make more complex items and garments in our higher skill level classes. We keep beginner classes small to make sure you get all the attention you need as a beginner sewist with lots of questions.
We will cover everything you need to know to set out on your sewing journey:
- Build confidence with sewing machines
- try out different types of machines to find out what works for you.
- Good habits for safety and best results.
- Learn about properties of different textiles and tools.
- How to read and cut from a sewing pattern
- How to use different attachments on the sewing machine
The Projects:
1: Make a set of Napkins or Hankies (Straight lines & Roll Hem)
2: Make a pencil case (Insert a zip, turn corners, patch pocket)
3: Make a Cushion Cover (Buttons, Button hole, piping)
This Course will take place over 5 week. With one 2 hour class each week.
You will need to bring along a basic sewing kit for your own use during class. The sewing kit will need to include: Fabric scissors, Machine needles, Bobbins to fit the studio machine or your own machine, pins, sewing thread. Sone basic materials will be provided for each project, but if you want to personalise or use nicer fabrics, you will also need to bring those along or purchase them in store. We have a variety of sewing supplies available.
